There are quite a few gadgets available as open source. I suggest downloading them and looking at the code. It should be all there (reading external data, parsing data, auto-update, loading images, ...)
The Google gadgets are available at http://code.google.com/hosting/gadgets.html but there are also some gadget developers with open source gadgets like me (http://code.google.com/p/desktopgadgets/source/checkout) or Yannick (http://code.google.com/p/gdesktopgadgets/source/browse/). If you don't use the code directly you could probably just download any gadget and look into the gg file to see how it works just to get a feeling for the coding itself.
