If it is the first case (gadget on GMail), I believe the answer is No - it's not possible. Gadgets are contained within an iframe, and it's not possible to access elements of the parent window. Also, there's not really a gadgets-for-GMail API, it's just a subset of the general [iGoogle] Gadgets API - so there are no API calls specifically for working with GMail.
