Are you referring to a gadget in the GMail sidebar, or an iGoogle
gadget that links to GMail? I suspect the first, because you talk
about the user interacting with your gadget after they've already
begun to compose an e-mail, but it's not entirely clear.

If it is the first case (gadget on GMail), I believe the answer is No
- it's not possible. Gadgets are contained within an iframe, and it's
not possible to access elements of the parent window. Also, there's
not really a gadgets-for-GMail API, it's just a subset of the general
[iGoogle] Gadgets API - so there are no API calls specifically for
working with GMail.
