Hi Rafael, I just checked a couple of my own GMail gadgets, and setprefs seems to still be working fine. My gadgets all use the legacy API; like yours, the same XML is designed to run on both GMail and the production iGoogle.
So without more information, it's anybody's guess why your setprefs isn't working. If you can post your gadget XML, it's likely that someone here can come up with suggestions.
