I can't be the only one who took one look at the newly-announced Google Web Elements (http://google.com/elements) and thought, "These are gadgets." Looking at them as a gadget developer, there's not a one that couldn't have been created quite easily using the Gadgets API in open syndication - they just would have had a different iframe source. In fact, several of them duplicate gadgets that already exist.
I find it puzzling that Google has developed a whole new framework for this with a mature Gadgets already on hand - and at some level, it makes me wonder how committed G is to the gadgets platform for the future.
