Correct there is no way to do it all from JavaScript right now. There is,
unfortunately, no public roadmap for JavaScript client library support.

The only way you could accomplish such a sync is to have a server-side
component that handles interacting with the Contacts API using XML. People
have built something like this before, I think, due to the cross-domain
problem in JavaScript preventing them from doing too much directly. The nice
thing is you can build a light-weight JSON representation of a GData feed
containing just the elements your UI needs.
