This sounds like a known nvidia-96 driver bug in Ubuntu 8.10, https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wine/+bug/300476 It only affects older cards (the ones that use the -96 driver). What nvidia card do you have? There are two known workarounds for this nvidia driver bug. 1. Disable proprietary nvidia-96 driver (not so good if you want 3d) and rebooting - or - 2. Create a text file named render.reg containing the lines [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\X11 Driver] "ClientSideWithRender"="N" and then load that with regedit. For vanilla wine, that's "wine regedit render.reg" For Picasa for Linux, that's "/opt/google/picasa/3.0/bin/wrapper regedut render.reg" Do either of these help?
