Thanks for the response!  Picasa reduced the image quality for all 60
photos even though it claimed that only the 3 I'd rotated needed
saving to disk.  I have been digging around a bit, and there is a
discussion of a quality reduction in the following thread:

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, but it might be.  Still, this
doesn't explain why unmodified photos needed to be rewritten to disk.

As for having saved the originals - that is a fantastic feature which
sure came in handy this time.
