What Linux distro are you using? If your camera is connected via PTP, on newer versions of Ubuntu, Gnome/Nautilus grabs the camera so you can view your photos through the file manager. However, this locks out other applications that are trying to access your photos.
If this is the problem, then you would need to umount/eject the camera from Nautilus first before accessing it from another program. If your camera supports USB storage mode, using that mode will make the camera appear as an external drive to Linux. Then you can access it from any program without locking issues.
