Well sure - if you want an extra gadget - but it's actually easier to use either a keyboard shortcut (if you have extra keys - like a magnifying glass key) or an old default ALT F1 is menu, ALT F2 is launch (search software/launch commands) and ALT F3 for search - so as not to clutter your panel and make another item load that you don't use often. It's available in the 'Places' menu in gnome...
