Gah! Turns out (predictably enough) to be nothing to do with picasa -
I'd just cream-crackered the permissions in my home directory in the
process of trying to rearrange the folder structure so openssh
couldn't use its key files properly. All sorted now. Sorry to have
bothered you and thank you for not replying - it's so much less
embarrassing that way than having to admit to lots of helpful people
that I've wasted their valuable time!
