Thanks, maybe they'll help somebody else. Slackware/fvwm95 just doesn't work that way.

I didn't actually install notepad, I just copied the notepad file into an appropriate place and executed it with 'wine notepad'.

OK, I give up.  The only things I use wine for are google earth and picasa,
although I installed notepad just to see if I could. So do I just download the
windows version and type 'wine whateverthewindowsversionis'?

Will this work?  I really don't want to break anything through ignorance.

I'm running slackware with fvwm95.
