I just installed gthumb. I don't know how it integrates with Picasa,
unless it changes the USB transfer protocol in the background. In any
case, I then loaded Picasa but it did not access my camera data. I
tried running gthumb on its own, but it also would not access my
camera data. Returned this message: "an error occurred in the io
device" "camera is already in use".

I was able to import my photos using F-Spot.
