I have posted a tutorial on thematic mapping that may be of interest to this
group. The tutorial's home page is http://tnatlas2.geog.utk.edu/TutorHome.
The Census Mapping Tutorial is designed to help people learn how to create
thematic maps using Flex, Google Maps, and data from the US Census. While
the tutorial focuses on US Census data, the methods and techniques used in
the tutorial are applicable to most any data.
Some highlights of the topics covered:
On-the-fly, user defined thematic mapping including methods of
classification
Managing data grids when the variables in the grid are not known until run
time
Creating bivariate plot charts with regression statistics
On-the-fly generation of polygon styles
Using and managing KML overlays
Linking related data views
Using state transitions to create smooth changes in project layout
Linking tabular data to KML files of census polygons
Generating PDF reports using AlivePDF
Working with various controls, such as TabNavigators,Repeaters, and Tile
Layout Containers
Some other items that are more Flex than mapping related
might also be of interest. These include:
States and transitions
Tile layouts and repeater functions
Binary searches of data provider information
The tutorial uses the following programming tools and libraries:
Flash Builder 4 with the 3.5 SDK
The Google Maps for Flash API, version 1.18
The Google Map API Utility Library for KML manipulation
AlivePDF for generating PDF files
I hope to have an updated version that uses the Flash Builder 4 SDK and the
latest Google Maps for Flash API, along with the soon to be released
American Community Survey data available in the first half of 2011.
