Add tests to your javascript so that it handles the error how you'd like - either stepping over it, and/or flagging up a problem in the supplied XML data. Add tests to your PHP so that it detects rubbish data and steps around it and/or flags the problem up for action. Finally, add data validation to your database input routines so that rubbish can't sneak in there in the first place. Stitch in time :)
