The key system does work, it has been working for years and thousands of people are using them successfully so something you have done or that your server is doing is not right. I suggest you go back and carefully examine what the key system generates and copy the example it creates into your directory and try it again. Trust me here, you're not copying it exactly correct.
By the way, using "supersecretkey" (or whatever) in your pasted code is not secret.
