The problem with the overlay map is a problem of scope. Your map
variable is local to the load function.  The routines that try to add
the overlay run in the global context.  For it to work, remove the
"var" from in front of the map variable in the load function and add a
new var map; declaration just before it.

This example does what you are trying to do:
