No tutorial but a quick trip to the API documentation would have done
the trick!

http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/reference.html#GPolyline

include an opacity tag with your colour tag in the xml file and then:

           var opacity = parseFloat(lines[a].getAttribute("opacity"));
           ...
           map.addOverlay(new GPolyline(pts,colour,width,opacity));
