Yes, you wouldn't want to tackle using this in its current state
without some JavaScript experience. It needs more documentation,
simpler examples, all that good stuff.

Definitely a good idea. Julie, see my other reply to Berry for some
more info on the jQuery and Ajax loader dependencies.

That part should be easy. For example code, see the colorize()
function in testmap.js. For an example that uses real data instead of
random colors, see the colorize() function in this file:
