Yes, this is what I thought, too. But as I just tested: 1. The same problem shows up with using other image formats in the URL (png8, png32, jpg, jpg-baseline).
2. If I save the static map as a (say) JPEG-file on my desktop and then reference this image, the iPhone browser shows it: http://www.standortplanung.ch/teststaticmap/test.html So the image itself can be displayed on iPhone's browser. Still wondering...
