After more investigation it seems that the problem is as I suspected that I was using an id name that was already in use by the API.
After editting my original problem page and changing my div id from DivDirections to XDivDirections the problem disapears. I've seen other posts with the IE6 Operation aborted problem so if you get this then try changing your id names to something that is unlikely to have been used in the API.
