We will be formalising the use of the currently undocumented but supported 'channel' parameter for this purpose. The channel parameter can be set to any value you wish and when usage reporting is enabled for all Premier accounts it will be possible to break reports down by channel.
You can use channel wherever you currently need the client parameter and and set it to any value you like to segment your traffic as you need. ie. you can have different values for channel for applications on the same domain, or share the same channel across applications on multiple domains if you wish to group traffic in that way. The only restrictions are that we recommend that channel parameters be no more than 20 alphanumeric characters, and that it is not permitted to dynamically change the channel parameter used by an application, for example to track the usage of individual users.
