Thanks for all the info bratliff. That issue is exactly what I have been experiencing and it has been accepted by Google so hopefully will be resolved fairly soon. I plan to try the "ugly hack" in the meantime. You should add your suggestion to use 'visibility' style instead of 'display' to hide image display during loading to the issue tracker for this.
