What you are asking about is called geocoding. See the example in MIke Williams' excellent tutorials at http://econym.org.uk/gmap/geo.htm
However, if you cannot program in Javascript, I would recommend that you don't even try implementing anything using the Google Maps API. Do a course in Javascript or attempt some good tutorials. When you feel confident with the basics then come back to the Google Maps API and look at the API documentation ( http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/index.html ) and the Code Samples linked to in the left sidebar on that page.
