The satellite images for Australia were taken at different times and 
blended together later. Google Maps doesn't have any indication of which 
images were captured in which year, but you can find that information in 
Google Earth. You have to zoom in fairly close to the particular point 
you are interested in, and the image date of the point that the cursor 
is over is displayed in the status bar at the bottom. (For points that 
have no date, it probably means that the imagery for that point is a 
blend of two images taken on different days.)
