I thought I would post this for anyone else who was attempting to
overcome the lack of a distance() method in MySQL. I used a formula
to calculate the distances between polygons within my map, and then
display the polygons that were a certain distance from the selected
polygon the user had searched for. Displaying adjacent polygons like
this greatly enhanced the value of the utility I was creating, and I
hope someone else finds some value in the tutorial I wrote about it.

Thanks!

P.S. If you appreciate this, I hope you'll thank me by rating this
post (and me).
