I came accross the same issue and prepared a stripped down page which
shows the error on http://beacons.schmirler.de/mapx.html

Steps to reproduce:
- open IE7
- clear browser cache
- open the map and wait for a moment
- close browser
- open browser and map again
- wait till green light goes off. When it starts to light up again,
the error message should show up

The problem does not occur with API v2.115. Tested some random
versions between v2.116 and todays v2.x - all show null pointers on
various symbols.
One interesting thing I noted: The problem goes away if I don't
generate the gif on the fly but use a stored copy of if (plus random
parameter to avoid caching - see source code). Maybe a timing problem?

Thanks for your help,
Frank
