I dont think the Maps API has changed all that much in the last few years, well in the core basic functionality - which is all really need for a store locator.
The only issue you may run into is handling postcodes has changed from time to time, which really would be outside the scope of a store locator tutorial. The only real big change is a new version (v3) of the API is available in preview - which you could try to use- but dont know of any tutorials for that.
