After I switched doctype back, i validated.  there were several
errors.

that was very lazy of me to not have validated for so long...but i
corrected all of the errors, and it loads clean now.

WOW!  it was a conflict with prototype.js!

you will notice that i renamed my main.js wondering if that was the
problem before.  I DONT EVEN know what that PROTOTYPE IS DOING THERE!
Looks like maybe AJAX stuff in it.
