google maps api is not a data source, but if you have data you can display it using the api.
Would it be too much to display at one time?... shrug there is more than one way to display data so that depends on how you use the API and what format you use for your data... Pre-rendering what you want to display in tiled image format will allow large amounts of information to be presented but limits the interactivity.
