Try a completely different approach: use google's Ajax loader to load
the Maps API code asynchronously. The general skeleton would be this:
<head>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi?
key=your_key"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready({
google.load('jquery', "1.3.2", {uncompressed: false});
google.load('maps', "2.x", {other_params:"sensor=false"});
google.setOnLoadCallback(function()
{
// do everything else here
});
});
</script>
</head>
