Good suggestion marcelo, unfortunately though I am trying to avoid this. The reason is that it would double up the number of files I would need to host (my images already consume 250,000 files).
On a seperate note for anyone searching, one small saving grace of google maps is it DOES cut the map directly down the middle on a tile edge, on all but the 0 zoom level (where just 1 tile is the entire world).
