You should include what you've done so far, including a link to your existing map.
I suggest taking a look at one of the clustering functions, there are several and one might work for you. No point in reinventing the wheel. The approach I use for something like you're talking about is to create a tile layer and use pseudo markers instead, they work well when presented with the "Too many markers" problem.
