You might need to consider what you are trying to do exactly.  An
_apparently_ equally spaced grid on the screen (by pixels) won't
represent equal distances over the ground on a real map, due to the
distortion inherent in Mercator's projection.   Okay for a gaming map,
not so good for country sized real maps.

There are examples of "proper" grids if that's any use, drawn with
polylines
