Right you are Larry: "walk_walk_pink" wasn't right. The instant that was fixed and reloaded, my troublesome maps immediately jumped back the way they had been; this though "pink" never gets called by any of those, but of course the error skews everything that follows. It took me all of 10 seconds for the global-replace and the FTP. And yes, I must have done something; although I like to tell people that when I put pages up, they're perfect, but then out there in the ether they get hit by cosmic rays or sumfin, and mistakes just GROW, like in a Petri dish.
