well, you could go to both official websites and start reading, to start with
the common questions for esri seem to be a good place to start with: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgis10/common-questions.html and for google maps, it might take, for a bum like me :D less than 48 hours to grasp the basics and discuss a thesis :D now for esri i suppose it might take twice, 96 hours let's say.. so over 8 hours daily, you'll be able to get everythin in control in 21 days and for the last week, enjoy writing the thesis yourself ! i would do that if i were not working :) or i'd postpone it for next semester so as not to do anything stupid ;) how many days you have left to submit your assignment ? ?
