hl=en was mentioned in a bug report four years ago at http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/detail?id=692 -- see comment 7, but I don't know if it's been formally reported or fixed. But I don't think it's cropped up much. Are you sure that it's not simply that the result is actually the same in English and Spanish?
