Thanks for the tip.  Now I have another tree to bark up!

There seems to be vast amounts of documentation on Google Maps, but it's just "out there" and it's hard to determine what applies, what's deprecated and what just plain doesn't work.

It looks to me like basic functionality (e.g. creating a map, inserting placemarks and perhaps, uploading it to My Maps) takes pretty simple code, but I have not found any good practical examples or tutorials that walk you through the process. That simple level of functionality should be achievable with someone just learning Javascript (like me) if the right documentation was available.
