you can make the boxes as small as you like, and then you could merge
them together into one polygon.  After that you could use Douglas-
Peucker smoothing to reduce the number of vertices.

I've had a go at an algorithm for dissolving all the boxes into a
single buffer polygon, but I'm not sure if the algorithm is perfectly
correct.
