I thought custom tiles might be possible to use with My Maps (the
standard Google Maps interface for adding places collaboratively), but
it seems to only allow you to import kml files - not a custom map (or
any) using the API.

You should try using a single image as a kml overlay in My Maps. Test
it with your friends and see if you want to spend the time to learn
the API and make it better by using tiles of the image and the API.
