Thanks for that. The kml file used in the example is strictly UTF-8
compliant. Most of the files are not strictly compliant, for instance
this one:
http://www.jeremyc.com/2010/2010_08_17_Uluru_Base_Walk.kml

I presume this would show the same result with curl. I will try and
check later.
