OK. It turns out this does work. I was not able to tell because there is a current bug in Mobile Safari on iOS5 that is caching javascript even when you clear the cache. I had to reset the device to fix another error and just retested this now. panes.overlayMouseTarget.appendChild(div); Fixes the issue. Thanks for the tip.
