Adding scripts to spreadsheets?

I was looking at the spreadsheet API but could not find anything mentioning 
how to add scripts. Is it possible to add scripts to a spreadsheet similar 
to how Google's interface has on the menu "Tools>Script Manager" or  
Tools>Script Editor"? Which scopes do I need and how do I form the atom?
