Google is doing things the way they should be.  You're looking at it from
the wrong prospective.  Because Google isn't the one in charge of this
project, the XMPP Consortium is.  Google is just implementing the XMPP
standard and isn't putting anything live that doesn't meet the currently
adopted spec at this point.

If Google were trying to be like Microsoft, they'd go sidewinder and pull
exactly what you're suggesting.  That would be a bad thing.
