Hi Val,

Nice find! But I don't think this is a new feature. The themes you
mention are fairly old, and were probably designed using the original
API. Because they've become so popular, the attributes you've noticed
still have to work so those themes can still be used. I just tried
those attributes in one of my themes, and they work well!

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll get any comment from Google here —
there has been no post from a Google employee to this group for
several months.
