Sure enough. I set strictFirstColumnType to true and also had to
change the hAxis format to '####' so the "Year" date displayed
correctly. It seems the inherited property is '#,###'.

Thanks for the help - I'm now subscribed to release updates so I
shouldn't be so surprised next time.
