i have this same problem.  the way i have found to "work around" it is to 
use explicit values that map to the colors in the back end, and custom 
render a legend that shows the true values that map to the colors.  in the 
back end, i just convert between the true value ( a currency value ) and 
the color index value ( number from zero to max color index ).

i too would like to see geocharts support indexed coloring rather than 
gradient coloring based on threshhold or boundary values.
