In My Humble Opinion, I surely hope it takes off! Google Wave looks like a real step forward for organising communications for development projects as well as social nets not a toy or imaginary worl.. frankly I see things like "Lively" as a dime-a-dozen - glad they stopped it if it was chewing any resources that could go to THIS!
