Hi, I know the issue you are referring to. There is a beta release of SWFUpload which addresses the problem.
I do agree that Gears is superior. In fact I have contributed to the Google API library support for uploads/blobs as a GWT library. =D It will hopefully be available soon (though the schedule is completely out of my hands). But in the mean time we need to keep a flash option working...
