There is a web.xml in WEB-INF For more information, please see http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/j2ee/web-app_2_4.xsd. You can download GWT mail sample from http://code.google.com/p/dreamsource-orm/downloads/list, which is a database-related web application. You can find how to use web.xml there.
