I got started with no javascript or java skills. Merely an understanding of basic codeing (I previously knew Delphi, Basic, Actionscript). Moderate html/css skills. Really gwt was easy enough for me to learn everything as I went, especially when using Eclipse (which is a lovely IDE), and Firebug (which helps no-end in tracking down problems).
